Status of Service Discovery for Freimap development

An update on one of our Google summer of code projects: Service Discovery for Freimap. Stefano Pilla from Ninux.org is working on the project. We have widened the project a bit. He is now also working on porting freimap to IDE like
Netbeans. This will make it easier in the future to implement new graphic map views.

Service Discovery works fine and at the moment Stefano is testing a prototype and working already on documentation. During the project he got in touch with the creator of JmDNS, Rick Blair. JmDNS is an implementation of mdns for Java. He also started an exchange with the creator of JXMapKit
(SwingLabs – Josh) that is the new kind of map for freimap that we want
to use with Openstreetmap.

An important mentor for this project is Alx Morlang from Freifunk in Berlin. Thank you! And our friends from Ninux namely – Saverio, Claudio and all of the team. Service Discovery will be tested first in the freifunk ninux network in Rome during the upcoming weeks with mdns.

Einladung zum 3. Freien Freifunktreffen am Hufeisensee bei Halle

Am Samstag, den 18. Juli 2009, wollen wir euch gerne zu einem Freifunkstammtisch im Freien am Hufeisensee bei Kanena (südöstlich von Halle), am Fuß des ~ 30 Meter hohen Kanena’er Freifunk-Sendeturms herzlich einladen.

In Kanena gibt es eine astronomische Station, die wir besichtigen können. Ein Topf voll Chili und ein heißer Grill sorgen u.A. für das leibliche Wohl, die Kanena’er freiwillige Feuerwehr stellt uns das nötige Outdoor-Equipment. Bringt eure Hardware mit, wenn ihr spielen wollt, Zettel und Stift zum Ideen schmieden und ‘ne Badehose wenn schönes Wetter ist 🙂

Anfahrtsskizze zum Funkturm in Kanena relativ zum Hauptbahnhof Halle als Fußweg. Wer nicht mit dem Auto kommt, kann am Hauptbahnhof in die S-Bahn "S10" Richtung Leipzig einsteigen und bis zur nächsten Haltestelle "Kanena / Halle Messe" fahren. Von dort aus ist es dann nicht mehr weit. Beginn ist offiziell ab 15 Uhr, fürs BBQ und das Bier werden 5 € Spende erhoben. Für Leute, die abends nicht mehr nach Hause fahren wollen, könnten wir bestimmt auch ein paar Pennplätze stellen, dann wäre es aber gut, ihr schreibt uns vorher Bescheid in diesem Thema des Freifunk-Halle-Forums, und auch sonst könnt ihr natürlich gerne schreiben.

Rundfreifunk vom WCW 2009

Zum Wireless Community Weekend wird am Samstag, den 23.5.2009 zwischen 19-21 Uhr Live on air auf Radio Blau (UKW in Leipzig und Internetstream weltweit) eine Rundfreifunk-Sendung direkt aus dem Herzen Berlins aus gesendet. So stehen uns drei Stunden freier Radioraum auch auf ganz anderen Frequenzbändern zur Verfügung, der nur darauf wartet von uns mit Leben gefüllt zu werden. Wer Radio Blau nicht kennt, hier noch eine kurze Erklärung: Radio Blau ist ein Freies Leipziger Bürgerradio und ist im Großraum Leipzig mit jedem Radio empfangbar. 

Wer möchte, kann hierzu in Vorbereitung schon Audiobeiträge bzw. Interviews vorbereiten, die im Rahmen dieser Sendung ausgestrahlt werden können. Bitte meldet euch hierzu bei Ufo.

200. Artikel im Freifunkwiki

Heute wurde im wiki.freifunk.net der 200. Artikel bereit gestellt. Mittlerweile ist es dort recht aktiv geworden, sodass viele nun aktiv an diesen gemeinsamen Wiki arbeiten. Auch du kannst dich dort beteiligen und eure gewonnenen Erkenntnisse aus den Communities dort einfließen lassen.

Wenn ihr selbst aktiv werden wollt, seit ihr dazu recht herzlich eingeladen, und euren Tatendrang  schnellstmöglich in Artikeln zu verfestigen. 

Freifunk Summer of Code ten students accepted

Thank you to all applicants for the Freifunk Summer of Code project and congratulations to the accepted students! All together there were 49 applications for Freifunk. We could accept 10 students. They are currently updating their project proposals. I will present them here soon. We invite the students and anyone else to our Wireless Community Weekend at the end of May. More info coming out soon. Good luck for your summer of code projects For everyone who did not get in or people who did not apply, we welcome every contributor and user of the freifunk software tools and are looking forward to your involvement outside the Summer of Code.
