The CeBIT and Linux New Media are sponsoring Free/Open Source Projects to join the CeBIT from March 6-10 in Hannover, Germany. Freifunk was accepted as an Open Source organization. We have a booth and already have a confirmation of some Italien friends from the Ninux community who will join as well. 

I have set up a Wiki page for everyone who would like to help with the organization.

The organizers already confirmed to us, that we will have power supply and Internet. "Connectivity will be by network cable, not by WiFi." I think we can take care of that.

Some fantastic work was done during the last days working with some great folks to get an application for freifunk networks for the Google Summer of Code out. Our goal is to get new students excited about the idea of free networks and to join us in the development process and contribute code. We have formed an international group to get this application done. Besides talking to our developers in Germany I have been busily speaking to ninux.org from Italy, guifi.net from Spain and France Wireless in order to recruit our most talented and active developers as mentors for the programme. Not everyone was able to give me a "yes" yet, but we have formed a great team to start off and we are happy to welcome even more prospective mentors from other free wireless networks from around the world.

My idea is that we would have mentors for students who would maybe even be able to meet them locally. As we find already more than 170 free wireless communities worldwide on the global freifunk newswire, there is a chance we could do this in a lot of cases.

Freifunk serves as an umbrella for all the local projects here. We use the Freifunk-Wiki for our coordination. We started to collect ideas for possible student projects here already as well. Currently there are:

After the application of Freifunk is accepted, prospective students have two weeks to apply at the summer of code programme. We hope our application will be accepted and we will soon see new students contributing to the code base of our projects. We are looking forward to have students participating on an ongoing basis in the free wireless freifunk networks all over the world.

Das WaveHAN in Hannover ist ein WLAN, das vollständig privat organisiert wurde. Hier haben sich Mitglieder des Chaoscomputerclubs Hannover zusammengefunden, um sich in ihrer Stadt drahtlos zu vernetzen. Hier ging es darum ein unabhängiges Netz zu schaffen - frei von Zensur und Kontrolle durch die Provider und gemeinsamer also kostengünstiger Nutzung von Internetzugängen. Natürlich lassen sich Netz-Kabel nur recht schlecht durch die gesamte Stadt ziehen. So sind die einzelnen Zugangspunkte, Access-Points, in deren Nähe man drahtlos surfen kann, ebenfalls über WirelessLAN über längere Distanzen verbunden, allerdings über Richtfunk-Linkstrecken miteinander vernetzt. Große Teile von Hannover sind auf diese Weise bereits drahtlos vernetzt. Der Stadtteil Vahrenwald wird fast vollständig vom drahtlosen Netz abgedeckt.

Wer hier allerdings einfach nur kostenlos surfen möchte ist beim WaveHAN-Projekt fehl. am Platze. Denn die drahtlosen Macher haben sich ein Netz mit Aktiven Mitgliedern und dem Interesse an der Netzforschung zum Ziel gesetzt. Wer hier mitmachen will muss hier keinen Mitgliedbeitrag zahlen, dafür aber anderen zumindest seine Rechner-Ressourcen zur Verfügung stellen. Die WLAN-Richtfunkantennen bauen WaveHAN-Mitglieder übrigens selbst. Bringt doch eine einfach nur an die WLAN-Karte angestöpselte, leicht modifizierte Kuchenform für 10 Euro genauso viel wie eine 200 Euro teuer Antenne aus dem Fachhandel.
